Selection Process
  1. For applicants meeting the minimum requirements, the applications would be examined case by case. Shortlisted applications would be further screened by the Programme Management Committee members before recommendation for admission is made.

Aims

The Master of Science in Applied Economics (MScAECON) programme delivers a comprehensive blend of theoretical foundations and practical training in economic analysis. By engaging with a diverse selection of applied electives alongside rigorous required courses, students develop the expertise to analyze economic issues relevant to their professional and academic pursuits.

 

A key feature of the MScAECON programme is its balanced approach to economic education, offering flexibility for students to shape their learning journey according to their goals. This programme aims to:

 

  1. Develop competent applied economists: Students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the banking and financial sectors. Through specialized courses covering a range of business topics, including ESG, digital economies, and sustainable development, they learn to tackle contemporary challenges using the latest economic models and analytical techniques. The curriculum is further enhanced by industry collaborations, such as with the CFA Institute, providing graduates with a strong foundation for their professional careers.
  2. Prepare future theoretical researchers: Although most students are oriented toward applied economics, the programme’s well-structured curriculum offers the flexibility to select advanced electives focused on academic research. Students interested in further studies or research careers benefit from rigorous academic training and mentorship provided by internationally recognized faculty.

Academic Qualification

 

The overall scholastic record and potential of the applicant for admission is more important than prior preparation in specific areas of economics. While undergraduate specialisation in economics is desirable, the Programme is open to students whose undergraduate degree has been in other fields.

General Admission Requirements 


To be eligible for admission to the Master of Science in Applied Economics Programme, the applicant must hold a bachelor degree from a recognised university, or equivalent. Although a bachelor degree in economics or related areas is not a pre-requisite for admission, the applicant is expected to possess the knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics, with some training in mathematics (especially in calculus and linear algebra) and statistics.


Language Proficiency Requirements

 

Proof of English proficiency is required for applicants whose first degree were obtained from non-English-medium institutions. The English proficiency requirement can be fulfilled by achieving any one of the following standards:

 

  1. a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 79*; or
  2. a minimum of 6.0 in IELTS*; or
  3. a minimum score of 450 in CET-6*; or
  4. other equivalent qualifications.

*Note: Test result provided should be within two years from the date of issuance of the Admission Offer letter. TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Indicator test is not accepted.
