Master of Arts (MA) in Translation and Bilingual Communication

Academic Qualification

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, or an equivalent professional qualification.

Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicants for the Interpreting or Practical Stream should

1. be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in English such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications:
   • Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English; or
   • Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE); or
   • a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based)*; or
   • an overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS*; or
   • CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above*; and
2. be able to communicate in Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in Chinese such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications:
   • Grade D or above in AS Chinese Language and Culture (HKALE); or
   • Level 4 or above in Chinese Language (HKDSE); or
   • a BA degree with Chinese as the medium of instruction.

Applicants for the Technology Stream should

1. be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in English such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications:
   • Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English; or
   • Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE); or
   • a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based)*; or
   • an overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS*; or
   • CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above*; and
2. be able to communicate in a language besides English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in that language such as a BA degree with the language either as a major component or as the medium of instruction, or equivalent qualification. If the non-English language is Chinese then the qualifications required will be the same as that of Interpreting or Practical Stream.

*Note: Test result provided should be within two years from the date of issuance of the Admission Offer letter. TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Indicator test is not accepted.

Others

The following documents must be submitted for assessment upon application:

1. a copy of the original academic transcript of the first degree received by the applicant;
2. two letters from referees of good standing in the community who are familiar with the applicant’s academic performance and/or professional work; and
3. two 300-word self-statements, one in English and one in Chinese, outlining the applicant’s academic interests and objectives. (Applicants for the Technology Stream is not required to provide the self-statement in Chinese.)

MATRAN Programme International Student Scholarship

The M.A. in Translation & Bilingual Communication Programme (hereafter “the Programme”) set up this international student scholarship scheme in order to award outstanding and eligible applicants from a region/country outside the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Two scholarships will be awarded per academic year. Each recipient will be awarded HK$50,000 after he / she is officially admitted to the Programme. All eligible students will be automatically considered. Application is not needed.

MATRAN Programme Entrance Student Scholarship (Local Students) / (Non-local Students)

The Programme set up this entrance student scholarship scheme to award applicants with outstanding academic performance. A maximum of two entrance scholarships, two local and two non-local, will be awarded per academic year. Each recipient will be awarded HK$30,000 after he / she is officially admitted to the Programme. All eligible students will be automatically considered. Application is not needed.
