CommencementGraduation

Students who have completed or expect to complete studies in the current academic year will be invited to attend the Commencement to celebrate their accomplishments with peers, family and friends. Participation in the Commencement does NOT represent graduation.

 

The Commencement for taught programmes is held only once in May/June during the academic year.  

Graduation is the successful completion of a study programme for which students are approved by the Senate to receive a degree or diploma. The Senate will consider and approve students’ graduation in several rounds during the academic year.  

The 65th Commencement for students of taught programmes, which will be Faculty-/School-based, will be held in the period from 5 June 2024 to 13 June 2024.  For details, please refer to the Programme Schedule.

 

The ceremonies for graduates of Beijing Normal University – Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (BNU-HKBU UIC) and doctoral and research degrees will be announced in due course.

The 65th Commencement will be held at the Academic Community Hall (ACH).

All final year students of taught programmes may participate in the 65th Commencement, invitation and details regarding the commencement ceremony will be sent to you by your Faculty/School via email in late March 2024

Yes, you are required to confirm your attendance with the Faculty/School.  Invitation and details regarding the commencement ceremony will be sent to you by your Faculty/School via email in late March 2024.  Please check your HKBU email account on a regular basis in order to get updated information about the ceremony.

 

Late registration will NOT be entertained and your absence at the ceremony will be assumed.

No, participation in the commencement ceremony does NOT represent that you have officially graduated from the University.  The Commencement is simply an annual occasion for students who have completed or expect to complete studies to celebrate their accomplishments with peers, family and friends.  In order to graduate, you must fulfil all the degree requirements and be approved by the Senate for graduation.

No, you do not need to defer your graduation for not joining the commencement ceremony. You will be approved to graduate as long as you have met all the degree requirements.  It is not mandatory for you to participate in the commencement ceremony for graduation.  The Commencement is simply an annual occasion for students who have completed or expect to complete studies to celebrate their accomplishments with peers, family and friends.  

All final year students of taught programmes are eligible to participate in the 65th Commencement preceding their graduation date.  If you have completed or expect to complete all the requirements of your programme in the current academic year, including summer studies, please register your attendance for the commencement ceremony.  Invitation and further details regarding the ceremony will be sent to you by your Faculty/School via email in late March 2024

 

As the commencement ceremony will be held before students’ graduation is confirmed, students who eventually fail to meet the graduation requirements in the current academic year, resulting in a deferral of their graduation, will be invited to attend the commencement ceremony again in the following year.  As such, if you do not think that you are able to complete the graduation requirements this year, you may consider NOT registering for the ceremony this year.

Every student will be given two guest tickets.  In view of the capacity of the Academic Community Hall, request for additional guest tickets will NOT be entertained.

Please submit your request for Amendment of Name to the Academic Registry/Graduate School/School of Continuing Education immediately.  Request made after 12 April 2024 will NOT be entertained.

 

Academic Regalia (Rental of academic regalia is not applicable to BNU-HKBU UIC graduates)

 

It is a MUST for you to wear academic regalia for attending the commencement ceremony.  

The gown-hiring service is provided by Victoria Uniform.  Please refer to its website external link for making on-line reservation of graduation gowns.  Information on the address, opening hours and telephone numbers of the rental outlets is also available on the website.

 

Graduates should use an HKBU online system code to login to the website external link of Victoria Uniform for making reservation.

The graduation gown registration period is from 18 April to 4 June 2024 for students of taught programmes.

The graduation gown collection period is from 2 May to 14 June 2024 for students of taught programmes.

The rental period is counted on a 35-calendar-day basis, both day of collection and day of return inclusive.  You are required to pay a rental fee and deposit.

If the full set of academic regalia is returned on time and in good condition, the deposit will be refunded to you in full by Victoria Uniform when you return the academic regalia at the rental outlet.
