Selection Process
  1. Short-listed applicants may be interviewed should the Programme Board deem it necessary.
  2. Application result will be reflected in the application status in the online application system.
AimsWe aim to train cultural professionals in the foundations of writing and thinking creatively in both English and Chinese, so they are able to develop their careers in the language of their choice yet have an international, cross-cultural outlook in their development. The Programme is designed to recognize and strengthen the role creative writing plays for professionals in different cultural and creative fields, especially during challenging times in local and global contexts. Through appropriate training, graduates can turn their creative writing into a significant strategy to deal with social issues, community development, personal anxiety, etc. and to serve as a communicative channel to bring civic engagement, transparency, and better understanding to the community.

Academic Qualification

 

Applicants should possess:

 

  1. a bachelor’s degree with at least second class honours; or
  2. an equivalent qualification


Language Proficiency Requirement

 

Applicants are required to demonstrate a bilingual ability in speaking, listening, and writing in English and Chinese. Cantonese proficiency is not required.

 

Applicants should meet the language requirements below in both Chinese and English:

 

  1. English qualifications:
    1. Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English; or
    2. Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE); or
    3. a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based)*; or
    4. an overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS*; or
    5. CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above*; or
    6. a Bachelor's degree with English as the medium of instruction; and
  2. Chinese qualifications:
    1. Grade D or above in AS Chinese Language and Culture (HKALE); or
    2. Level 4 or above in Chinese Language (HKDSE); or
    3. Grade 5 or above in Chinese Language A Standard & Higher Level at International Baccalaureate (IB); or
    4. Grade 6 or above in Chinese Language B Higher Level at International Baccalaureate (IB); or
    5. Level 2 or above in the Shumian Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (SHSK)*; or
    6. Total score of 240 or above in the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (Chinese Proficiency Test HSK level VI)*; or 
    7. a Bachelor's degree with Chinese as the medium of instruction; or
    8. passed the Chinese language test arranged by the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, HKBU

*Note: Test result provided should be within two years from the date of issuance of the Admission Offer letter. TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Indicator test is not accepted.


Others

 

The following documents must be submitted for assessment upon application:

 

  1. a 12-15 page writing sample of creative works in any genre (such as fiction, nonfiction, or poetry), including both English and Chinese works (in 12-point Times New Roman, double-spaced). Note: Poetry may be single-spaced. The applicant should submit their best work, so the proportion of English to Chinese is up to the applicant.

  2. a 1-page Master Project proposal in either English or Chinese. (The Master Project is a 6-credit course over two semesters that requires completing a supervised, independent research and/or creative project.)
