The Faculty of Arts consists of six departments: Chinese Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Humanities and Creative Writing, Music, Religion and Philosophy, the Language Centre; and four research centres: the Centre for Applied Ethics, the Centre for Chinese Cultural Heritage, the Centre for Sino-Christian Studies, and the Centre for Translation. The Faculty of Arts offers seven undergraduate programmes, in Chinese Language and Literature, Creative and Professional Writing, English Language and Literature, Humanities, Music, Religious Studies and Translation. The Faculty also collaborates with the Faculty of Social Sciences in jointly offering the double degree of BA (Hons) in English Language & Literature and BEd (Hons) in English Language Teaching. As for taught postgraduate programmes, the Faculty offers the MA in Chinese Literature, Language and Culture, MA in Ethics and Public Affairs, MA in Language Studies, MA in Literary and Comparative Studies, MA in Music, and MA in Translation and Bilingual Communication. The research postgraduate programmes are a natural outgrowth of the undergraduate programmes and staff research emphases within the University. MPhil or PhD may be pursued either in full-time or part-time mode. A student is required to fulfil the coursework requirements and to complete an approved programme of supervised original research culminating in the submission of a written dissertation. Students are admitted to various disciplines in areas such as Modern/Classical Chinese Literature, Chinese Language and Etymology, English Language and Linguistics, English Literary Studies, Translation Studies, Humanities, Music Education, Music Composition, Philosophy, Christian Studies, and others. The Faculty of Arts offers programmes which seek to direct students into academic, intellectual, spiritual, moral and cultural adventures. Courses in the Faculty attempt to fill the needs of the community for graduates who possess strong language abilities in both Chinese and English, a range of transferable skills and creativity. Apart from academic programmes, the Faculty of Arts organizes activities to develop a rich cultural environment for students. Creativity-inspiring activities such as “The Lion Rock Poetry Reading” (which promotes the appreciation of classical and modern Chinese poetry), and “The Intervarsity Creative Writing Competition” are held to enhance university students’ creative writing. In addition, the International Writers’ Workshop was established in 2004 to cultivate literary creativity by organizing writing workshops, public lectures, symposia and creative writing recitals for the internationally acclaimed Writer-in-Residence and a number of overseas Visiting Writers every year. Built upon a solid foundation in both teaching and research, and with the advantage of having a number of faculty members who are established writers, composers and music performers, the Faculty of Arts has an established track record of nurturing students’ creativity in language and music. Our graduates are valued for their ability to learn quickly, analytical and critical thinking skills, bilingual and bicultural training, and creativity and flexibility. Graduates from various major disciplines of the Faculty of Arts go into a wider variety of fields for career development. | |||||||||
