Department of English Language and Literature

The Department of English Language and Literature is a multi-disciplinary department, which differs significantly in its programme offerings and staff composition from many other similar departments in Hong Kong. It serves as the ¡§home¡¨ for staff teaching in the BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature, the BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and BEd (Hons) in English Language Teaching, and BA (Hons) in Translation. Some colleagues are also involved in the teaching of the part-time taught MA Programme in Language Studies and the MA in Literary and Comparative Studies. The Department has the following as its major research strengths:

a) Literatures written in English;
b) Linguistics and applied language studies;
c) Translation studies;
d) Comparative literature (including literature and other disciplines);
e) Cross-cultural studies;
f) Gender studies;
g) Creative writing;
h) Multi-modal discourse;
i) World Englishes, tone and language variety; and
j) Literary theory and globalization.
