Useful Notes on Taking Minor Programmes

1. You must fulfil the minor programme requirements by making use of the units for free electives.  This means if you choose a course to fulfil the minor programme requirement, its course group must be under free electives. 
2. Whether you have a minor programme or not, you must meet the free electives requirements in order to graduate.

A course cannot be double-counted as a major and minor course at the same time.  There are 4 scenarios:

(i) If a major required course is also listed under your minor required courses, it may NOT be double counted.  The units you gained on this course will serve to satisfy your major unit requirement only.  It will NOT be counted towards the minor programme, and you have to choose another course under the list of minor elective courses to fulfil the minor unit requirement.

(ii) If a major required course is also listed under your minor elective courses, it may NOT be double counted.  The units you gained on this course will serve to satisfy your major unit requirement only.  It will NOT be counted towards the minor programme, and you have to choose another course under the list of minor elective courses to fulfil the minor unit requirement.

(iii) If a minor required course is also listed under your major elective courses, it may NOT be double counted.  The units you gained from this course will serve to satisfy your minor unit requirement only.  It will NOT be counted towards the major programme, and you have to choose another course under the list of major elective courses to fulfil the major unit requirement.

*  If a minor elective course is also listed under your major elective courses, it may NOT be double counted.  You may use it to fulfil either your minor or your major unit requirement.

Transferred courses/exempted courses may serve to fulfil the minor programme requirement but the number of transferred units/exempted units allowed for a minor programme is limited to not more than 6 units.

There is no GPA requirement specifically for the minor programme.  However, a student, in order to graduate with a minor, has to:

1. fulfil all university general requirements.
2. pass all courses required in the major and minor programmes.
3. attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Students can make use of the units for free elective courses to take up to 2 minor programmes.  Students who plan to pursue double minor should take note of the following, in addition to the requirements listed above:

1. If a minor required course is also the required course of another minor programme, it may NOT be double counted.  The units you gained on this course will serve to satisfy the unit requirement of 1 minor programme only.  You have to choose another course under the list of minor elective courses to make up for the units of the other minor programme. 
2. If a minor required course is also listed under another minor programme as a minor elective course, it may NOT be double counted.  The units you gained on this course will serve to satisfy the minor required requirement only.  It will NOT be counted towards the other minor programme, and you have to choose another course under the list of minor elective courses to fulfil the unit requirement of the other minor programme.
3. If a minor elective course is also listed under another minor programme as a minor elective course, it may NOT be double counted.  You may use it to fulfil the unit requirement of either 1 minor programme. 

Owing to limits on class quota set by academic departments, please note that you will NOT be guaranteed a place for any minor course you wish to take.  Successful enrolment on minor courses is subject to limitations on course quota, class schedule, etc.

Students who have successfully accumulated 15 units required by the minor programme may apply for graduation with minor in March of your final year.

The Academic Registry will send e-mail to all final year students to invite application for minor via the BUniPort.  Final result will be released via the BUniPort.
