Course Exemption/Transfer of Units
1.1 For students admitted to Year 1 of study with advanced standing (Non-HKDSE qualifications) in the academic year of 2016 or after, you may apply for transfer of units of up to 15 units if you have taken equivalent courses in other institutions before admission. Out of these 15 units, the transfer of unit for General Education courses will be capped at 12 units. If the application is approved, you will be exempted from taking the courses in the curriculum and no course replacement is required. 1.2 For students admitted to Year 1 of study with advanced standing (Non-HKDSE qualifications) in the academic year of 2015 or before, you may apply for exemption from taking certain courses in the curriculum if they have taken equivalent courses in other institutions previously, but they are required to replace the exempted courses with other courses to make up for the units being exempted. Before submitting the application form to the Academic Registry, you can check out the Replacement Course you will be required to take. Application form is available here.
1.3 For students admitted directly to Year 2 or 3, your Major Department / Programme will work out the unit transfer and course exemption arrangement for you at the time of your admission. Application for course exemption in addition to those granted at admission are normally not accepted.
1.4 The University reserves the right to refuse to grant exemption for courses which are not deemed to be equivalent to the University courses and for courses with grades below the equivalence of grade C in the University grading system.
1.5 Students may submit the Application Form (use one form for one course prefix) together with copies of course outlines/syllabuses and academic transcripts no later than the above deadline. However, students are advised to submit their applications as early as possible in August so that they can know the application result earlier and enjoy more time to complete the subsequent adding or dropping of courses before the add/drop period ends.
1.6 Application will be submitted to the relevant departments for recommendation. The final approval rests with the Academic Registrar.
1.7 Students will be notified of the result in writing normally within three weeks after full submission of supporting documents.
2. Exemption from University Chinese UCLC1005 (For students with NO Chinese background or whose Chinese background is considered not sufficient to take UCLC1005)
Students may submit Application for Exemption from University Chinese (UCLC1005) to Academic Registry. Students will be notified the application result by in writing.
3. Exemption from University's Putonghua Graduation Requirement

3.2 Arrangement of the Diagnostic cum Exemption Test (DET) is available here.
3.3 Students may submit Application for Exemption from University's Putonghua Graduation Requirement to Academic Registry. Students will be notified the application result by in writing.
4. Transfer of Units (For returning exchange students)
4.1 Normally, a student’s transferred units (including units granted at the point of admission and units obtained through exchange programmes) should not exceed one-half of the total units required for graduation. Senior Year Entrants admitted directly to Year 3 of study in 2015 or after may receive an additional unit transfer of up to 16 units if they subsequently participate in an exchange programme. 4.2 Please submit the application form in hard copies, with the official academic transcripts and course outlines/syllabuses to the Academic Registry (Room 701, Academic and Administration Building) as soon as you have returned to Hong Kong.
4.3 Application will be submitted to the relevant departments for recommendation. The final approval rests with the Academic Registrar.

4.5 For final year students joining any exchange activities after graduation, the information related to that exchange activities will NOT be included in the academic record and transcripts. No application for unit transfer will be accepted.
5. Transfer of Units (For students directly admitted to Year 2 or Year 3 to fulfill the minor programme requirements)
5.1 For students directly admitted to Year 2 / Year 3 and have been granted transfer of units at the point of admission, you may see if there is/are any course(s) which has/have been granted unit transfer can be used to fulfil the requirements of a minor programme. Please note that a maximum of 6 units approved for transfer can be used to fulfil the minor programme requirements.
5.2 Students should submit Application for Transfer of Units to Fulfill Minor Programme Requirements (For students admitted directly to Year 2 or Year 3) to the Academic Registry (Room 701, Academic and Administration Building).
5.3 Students will be notified of the result in writing normally within three weeks after full submission of supporting documents.
