Research activities are considered salient elements in the academic programmes of the Faculty. This is true not only for the research based postgraduate degrees but also true for those at the undergraduate level. Each undergraduate student is required to conduct an independent study in their final year. There are two possible ways to satisfy this programme requirement. Students who perform satisfactorily at the end of Year II can take up either a research project or a literature study. In both cases, a thesis or dissertation showing the originality of such study should be submitted for the final assessment. An oral presentation of their thesis or dissertation will be conducted to assess the students' presentation skills and their understanding of the courses.

We place considerable emphasis on training students' analytical, project management, computing application and problem solving skills. Application of science, mathematics, and computing to real-world scientific investigations as practised by professionals has been an important feature of the programmes offered by the Faculty.

In order to broaden students' scope of knowledge, they are required to "cross-over" into other Faculty disciplines as part of the multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary approach. The Faculty, in fulfilling the service-teaching role, has also offered a selection of courses that are suitable for non-science students.
