Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Biology (3-year)

The BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology programme is structured to equip students with the necessary background and training in the biological sciences to enter careers related to biotechnology, environmental monitoring and pollution control, as well as other fields that require a solid biological foundation.

The broad objectives of this programme are to achieve the following:

1. To train students in biology with an emphasis in botany and zoology;
2. To instil in students an understanding of the unique characteristics and underlying principles of the vast spectrum of living organisms (from biochemical, physiological, molecular, behavioural, numerical and environmental perspectives) in both pure and applied biology; and
3. To develop students' problem solving and critical thinking skills, in which they are repeatedly exposed to challenging exercises and small projects involving local scenarios.

Students who opt for the Biotechnology concentration will gain basic and up-to-date knowledge and training in biotechnology techniques including molecular biology, immunology and fermentation and enzyme technology; while Environmental Science concentration students will receive training to understand the biological and chemical basis of environmental problems, their control and management, as well as the restoration and remediation of degraded or derelict land and ecosystems.

Career prospects for Applied Biology graduates include: the civil service (Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Environmental Protection Department, Food and Environmental Hygiene Department); commerce/industry; technical sales promotion/technical advising; research and technical support; teaching and postgraduate studies.
