Department of Marketing
Head: Prof Gerard P Prendergast

The Department of Marketing is responsible for the administration of two concentrations, namely the Marketing concentration and the China Business Studies concentration, in the Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) degree programme. It also offers various courses in the Master of Business Administration degree programme, and enrols research postgraduate students.

The Department's activities are based on a theme of Socially Responsible Marketing (SRM). Members of the Department believe that conducting socially responsible marketing and making profits are mutually supportive and both are important. This SRM theme is reflected across a range of the Department's research projects and publications. Recent projects relate to offensive advertising, ethically problematic selling methods in China, counterfeit products, green marketing, materialistic attitudes amongst Chinese youth, the ethical beliefs of marketing managers and consumers in China, and Guanxi relationships. Colleagues were actively involved in organizing and participating in the Second World Business Ethics Forum hosted by the university in 2008. Colleagues have been involved in conducting Corporate Social Responsibility and Compliance Audits for various organizations. This SRM theme is also embedded in the courses offered by the Department. Students in advanced levels are actively involved in various service learning projects to enhance their learning as well as the community.

Students are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships and international exchange programmes. Graduates from the Marketing and the China Business Studies concentrations have been granted exemptions by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK) in professional examinations. Staff members are also active in professional bodies such as the Hong Kong Institute of Marketing, the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and the China Marketing Association for Colleges and Universities.
