Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in China Studies - Sociology Option

Sociology is a discipline concerned with the study of the dialectic relationship of individuals and society. At one level it is concerned with the way in which we know and understand the social world. In this context sociologists are concerned about the ideas that we have about ourselves and others. Central ideas relate to how individuals acquire and manage their social identities and to the situational location of meaning. At the micro level we are concerned with how behaviour is structured and understood. At the macro level we are concerned with dominant ideas and societal values.

Sociology is also concerned with social structures and the way in which they are organized. These structures may be business organizations or schools, families or friendship networks. Sociologists are interested in both the formal arrangement of statuses and with the informal pattern of behaviour. Population studies and demographic analysis are also included within Sociology. Here the focus is with the social characteristics of populations and their changes over time.

In this programme all students will be required to develop a sound knowledge of Sociological Theory and Sociological Research Methods. They will also be required to be familiar with the main features of social development and social organization in mainland China and Hong Kong. Additionally, they will be free to choose from a wide range of electives.

The combination of theoretical knowledge, academic investigation and first-hand experience provided in this option trains student skills in social analysis and its practical application. In the changing circumstances of the modern world, where the ability to identify, analyse and solve problems is valued, a training in Sociology is highly relevant. Graduates will be able to pursue a variety of worthwhile careers in the public or private sectors which contribute to the understanding of mainland China and the social and economic well-being of Hong Kong.

The aims of the Sociology Option are:

1. The illumination of the complex pattern of relationships among individuals, groups and larger social structures, in a cross-cultural perspective;
2. The enhancement of an understanding of the dynamic interaction of various institutions of society as these affect and are affected by social change;
3. The appreciation of the complexities of transitional modern Chinese society in all its manifestations;
4. The thorough preparation appropriate for postgraduate studies in Sociology or a related discipline; and
5. The critical acquisition and application of such transferable skills as problem identification, argument formulation, evidence gathering, analytical logic, teamwork and communication ability suitable for a wide variety of professional careers in public administration, social service, education, civil service, and business.

Structure

The programme comprises five components, namely Programme General Requirement (1 unit), Complementary Studies Courses (24 units), Social Sciences Foundation Courses (12 units), Option Discipline Courses (36 units), and China Studies Courses (24 units), making up a total of 97 units required for graduation. The summer sojourn programme, though not carrying any units, must be taken by every student. The overall objective is to provide students with a broad-based education in line with the whole-person educational philosophy of the University, and also to provide solid training for students in a selected discipline, in addition to mastering knowledge about mainland China.

Summer Sojourn

A distinctive feature of the programme is the summer sojourn programme in which all students have to spend one month at Tsinghua University, Beijing to receive intensive training in Putonghua during the summer at the end of the second year. Since the students have taken the six-unit course Elementary and Intermediate Putonghua during the second year, the sojourn acts as an "immersion" programme in Putonghua training. Students will undertake Putonghua training for three hours per day, five days per week.

Another part of the summer sojourn programme consists of seminars on topics relating to current issues in mainland China. A total of eight to ten seminars on issues relating to topics of a political, economic, sociological, historical and geographic nature will be conducted during the sojourn.

A third part of the programme is composed of visits to places of particular interest to this programme. It is felt that students should be given some field experience in mainland China by visiting factories, farms, historical sites, government offices, etc. Four whole-day visits will be organized to places around the Beijing area during the sojourn period.
