Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) in Chinese Medicine
Programme Director: Prof Zhao Zhongzhen

The four-year degree programme aims at providing students with extensive training on a firm scientific basis of pharmacy in Chinese medicine. In the final year, students will spend one year doing supervised practicum in pharmaceutical plants, hospitals, botanical gardens and an honours project on a specific field. Scientific research concepts are emphasized throughout the programme and the concept of "whole-person education" is also stressed by providing students with a student-centred, adaptable and holistic education.

Graduates are expected to achieve the following attributes:

1.
Knowledge and Skills in Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine
- Knowledge of Chinese materia medica, its original source, and its unique processing methods;
- Knowledge of the identification methods of CM products;
- Knowledge of medicinal formulae and preparations; and
- Knowledge of CM history, current practices and future directions.

2.
Knowledge Relating to Medical Research
- The ability to select research courses, design research methods and perform basic data analysis; and
- The ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research programme and pursue higher research degrees.

3.
At Personal Level
- Ability to perform professional practice in pharmacy in Chinese medicine;
- Competence as a self-directed learner;
- Ability to critically appraise and adapt professional practice in the light of advancing knowledge; and
- Self-awareness and a whole-person concept.

The curriculum can be divided into several parts:

1. Main Discipline Fundamental Courses
It includes Chemistry for Life Science, Biochemistry, Medicinal Botany and Zoology, Anatomy, Histology and Physiology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, History of Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Medicinal Formulae, etc. These courses help students to grasp the basic knowledge in life science and lay a solid foundation for scientific researches in the future.

2. Complementary Studies Courses
These include Religion and Philosophy, English, Medical Ethics, Physical Education, information management technology, etc., which are offered in line with the University's commitment to "whole-person education".

3. Main Discipline Professional Courses
These include the study of Herbal Pharmacology, Phytochemistry, Chinese Medicine Preparation Analysis, Resources of Medicinal Plants, and Unique Processing Methods of Chinese Medicines, etc. These courses enhance students' ability to undertake professional practice and further research and strengthen their development capability in the discipline.

4. Elective Courses
Six elective courses are available for students to choose from. They intend to broaden the scope of knowledge of the students according to their needs and interests.

5. Supervised Practicum and Project Report
Students will spend the final year of study in supervised practicum. Practicum bases include pharmaceutical plants, hospitals, botanical gardens in Mainland and Hong Kong. Students are required to carry out an independent research topic on a specific field under the supervision of a Principal Supervisor. At the end of the projects, they are required to write a thesis and deliver an oral presentation.

The five study areas and their respective weighting in terms of numbers of units and percentages are as follows:

Main Discipline Fundamental Courses 41%
  Complementary Studies Courses 15%
  Main Discipline Professional Courses 28%
  Elective Courses 4%
  Supervised Practicum and Project Report 12%
