Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Language and Literature
 
The intellectual aims of the BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature Programme include:
 
a) The presentation of a coherent discipline which ensures rigorous mental training, the development of independent, critical thinking, and an appreciation of the life of the mind;
b) The instruction of students in literature and language studies in order that their minds be informed by great art, thought, and the expression of humane ideals;
c) The dissemination of the central works of the Western literary tradition to yet another generation of young people; the preservation of these cultural treasures; the relating of these works to the study of language; and
d) The encouragement of an enthusiasm for lifelong learning so that students will be prepared and able to adapt to changing personal and social conditions.
 
The practical objectives of the Programme include the education of graduates who are:
 
a) Prepared to enter postgraduate study requiring sophisticated knowledge of English language and/or literature; and
b) Prepared to enter a wide diversity of careers in education, civil service, business, and cultural affairs for which fluent English and flexible, critical and imaginative thinking are necessary.

1. Major Courses (60 units)
The programme of BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature provides a curriculum of 60 units progressing from introductory to advanced courses over a three-year period. The curriculum culminates in the Honours Project which enables the student to complete a significant, independent work.

2. Complementary Studies Courses (36 units)
Complementary Studies courses enable students to acquire an understanding of and a lively feeling for values, so that they are better able to cope with the challenges of the complex socio-economic, cultural, religious and political aspects of life in the contemporary world.
