Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Translation

This programme aims to foster a new generation of translators and interpreters who have a liberal and professional outlook, linguistic, cultural and semiotic competences acquired initially in academic surroundings and later in guided training in the professional workplace, and the skills and confidence to meet the challenge of both the local and regional translation markets in the years to come.

By participating in this programme, students will be able:

1.	To deepen their appreciation of the relationship between translation and other liberal arts courses, and of the affinity of translation with the liberal aims of a university education;
2.	To acquire a broad range of cultural knowledge including both the Chinese and Western cultural and intellectual modes through which a deep and sensitive bicultural consciousness is nurtured;
3.	To conduct independent academic research and solve translation problems;
4.	To have good knowledge of translation theories and disciplines related to translation and to be able to apply such knowledge to problem-solving and in communicative events;
5.	To acquire proficiency in the Chinese and English languages, as well as the bilingual and bicultural competence needed for translating from and into English and Chinese, orally as well as in writing; and
6.	To develop the technical skills, ethical awareness and operational ethos of the translation community in order to be fully prepared upon graduation to perform alongside fellow professionals.

Structure

The BA (Hons) in Translation degree programme is a "sandwich" model programme. It consists of two years of full-time study, a third year in professional placement, followed by a fourth year in full-time study.

By "placement"*, in the third year, is meant the arrangement by which, as far as possible, full-time employment (internship) for one year (as near as possible to 12 months) is secured for each student. During the on-the-job training, the student will be under an Adviser of Studies who will meet with the student at regular intervals to monitor the progress.
