Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Humanities
Head: Prof Stephen Y W Chu

The BA (Hons) in Humanities degree is a three-year full-time programme. Students undertake a core of interdisciplinary, cross-cultural courses and a concentration of single-discipline courses from a participating department. The programme is coordinated by the Programme Management Committee, the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Arts, and the staff of the departments involved.

In considering the Humanities in the contemporary Hong Kong context, the Humanities Programme at Baptist University adds two distinct features to the traditional disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to thinking about humanity. First, the programme is thoroughly bilingual. Students will read, write and speak in Chinese as well as English, developing their skills in both languages. By doing so, students will simultaneously respond to Hong Kong's specific linguistic environment, and they will experience one of the hallmarks of the study of the Humanities, the broadening of the human mind made possible with access to knowledge and wisdom through the mastery of two languages. Second, the programme is cross-cultural. Most of the Humanities core classes will emphasize the comparison of Chinese and Western cultures, with frequent reference to other Oriental cultures.

From these comparisons, students will reflect on the similarities and differences in Chinese and Western approaches to knowledge, conceptions of humanity and values. In the process of these reflections, students will learn to make vital determinations for themselves: What is it to be an individual? What is it to be a citizen? What is it to be a citizen of Hong Kong? A citizen of the world? How and why does one participate in the culture of one's time and place? How does one translate humane values in one's daily and professional life? To be able to answer these questions in both passionate and rational ways is one goal of a humanistic education.

The general aims of the programme include:

a) To provide a rigorous and relevant curriculum that develops students' language proficiency;
b) To equip students with reasoning and analytical skills;
c) To enhance students' ability to present lucid arguments and make independent judgment;
d) To encourage students to reflect on academic issues from an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective;
e) To stimulate students' initiatives of independent learning;
f) To produce graduates of distinction committed to lifelong learning; and
g) To create an environment in which academic discussion with one another, including teachers and students, is both valued and practised.

The objectives of the programme are:

a) The students would have a knowledge of interdisciplinary humanities courses in both Chinese and English languages;
b) The students would be familiar with the traditional and contemporary cultures of China and the world through the study of selected humanities texts;
c) The students would be prepared for careers that require proficiency of both Chinese and English;
d) The students would be prepared for careers that require reasoning and analytical skills, independent critical thinking, cultural literacy, and a sharp sense of cross-cultural issues;
e) The students would be prepared for graduate studies in humanities and related courses; and
f) The students would have self-learning skills that will contribute to their lifelong learning process.

The structure of the curriculum is as follows:

Humanities Core Courses 24 units
  Honours Project 6 units
  Humanities Elective Courses 6 units
  Concentration Courses 24 units
  Complementary Studies Courses 36 units
    ¢w¢w¢w¢w¢w
    96 units

1. Humanities Core Courses (24 units)
The Humanities Core Courses form the centrepiece and the most distinctive aspect of the programme. The Core is comprised of 24 units of broad-based interdisciplinary courses. Many of the classes are bilingual, cross-cultural and team-taught courses. All Humanities students must take all the Core Courses.

2. Honours Project (6 units)
All Humanities students undertake an Honours Project in Year III. This is a year-long independent research or creative project.

3. Humanities Elective Course (6 units)
Students have to take two Humanities courses from a list of electives.

4. Concentration Courses (24 units)
A Concentration is an eight-course, 24-unit sequence of courses offered to Humanities students by individual departments. The Concentration allows students to develop particular interests in Humanities-related disciplines.

A Concentration serves as a secondary field of study that supplements the Core Courses curriculum. While all the Core Courses are inter-disciplinary, the Concentrations focus on a single discipline closely associated with the Humanities. Concentration studies will help students recognize the distinctions between disciplinary and inter-disciplinary studies. They will also help students prepare to enter certain disciplinary postgraduate programmes and professions.

Each Concentration will be open to a number of students determined by the departments, so not all students may be admitted to their first-choice Concentration.

5. Complementary Studies Courses (36 units)
Complementary Studies courses help fulfil the University's aim to provide "whole-person education" for every student.
