Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music
 
The BA (Hons) degree in Music is a three-year full-time programme designed to provide students with an academic, creative and practical foundation for careers in music or music-related fields. The philosophy that the graduate is a person who can work independently, make critical judgments and solve complex problems underlies the programme design. The curriculum supports that philosophy by way of an increasing emphasis on independent work as the programme progresses from Year I through Year III.

 

More specifically the aims of the programme are:
 
a)
To provide a programme of study that develops the creative, intellectual, and performance abilities necessary for a variety of careers in music;
b) To provide a programme of study that utilizes modern technology to enhance traditional music learning and to encourage its use in creation, scholarship, performance, and teaching;
c) To provide students with an understanding of Hong Kong's Western and Chinese musical traditions and to encourage an inter-relationship of the elements of that heritage;
d) To provide a programme that encourages self-reliance, stimulates powers of communication, and develops the analytical and independent thinking expected in degree level work; and
e) To provide elements of a liberal education through a combination of complementary studies and electives that broadens perspectives beyond the major field of study, encourages the search for cultural inter-relationships, and an examination of personal philosophical positions.
 

The courses comprising the programme fall into three broad categories of Complementary Studies Courses (21 units), Core Courses (60 units), and Music Concentration Courses (15 units).

All students on the programme study music theory, Chinese and Western music history, analysis, individual and ensemble performance, and complete an honours project as part of the core. Students will use the computers, electronic instruments, and recording technology available in the Electro-Acoustic Music Centre (EMC) to broaden the traditional foundation of the programme. At the end of Year I students will select one of four concentrations: General (leading to a thesis as an honours project); Composition/Music Production (leading to a composition honours project); Music Education (leading to a thesis as an honours project); and Performance/Pedagogy (leading to a performance honours project). Complementary Studies Courses are to be completed during the first two years.
