Department of Chemistry
Head: Prof Raymond W Y Wong

The Department of Chemistry comprises 23 full-time faculty members supporting undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes. The Department offers two four-year undergraduate programmes in Chemistry and Analytical & Testing Sciences, leading to the degree of BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and Analytical & Testing Sciences respectively. The solid academic preparation of the programme will enable the graduates to pursue careers in laboratory technologies and practice, technical sales, commerce and teaching. For those graduates with good academic standing, they can pursue postgraduate studies at home or abroad. The Department also offers research postgraduate programmes leading to the award of MPhil and PhD degree. Current research areas undertaken by the faculty members are analytical science, bioinorganic chemistry, novel materials, organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, surface science and heterogeneous catalysis. Many of the faculty members are very successful in securing internal and external research funding on a competitive basis. The Department also operates an Environmental Monitoring Station, and provides Chemical Testing Services for the local industries. In addition, the Department offers two two-year part-time and one-year full-time taught postgraduate programmes leading to the degree of MSc in Analytical Chemistry and MSc in Food Analysis and Food Safety Management. Graduates of the programme will be able to assume the managerial role in chemical laboratories. The faculty members are strongly committed to excellence in teaching and research. Close interaction between faculty members and students is highly encouraged.

The Department is equipped with a broad range of modern chemical instrument for teaching and research. Some major equipment include two High-Field Superconducting NMR Spectrometers (400 MHz), one EPR Spectrometer, several FT-IR and FT-Raman Spectrometers, and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), four Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometers (GC-MS), a Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffractometer with CCD Detector, an X-Ray Photoelectron and Auger Electron Spectrometer (XPS-AES), an X-Ray Powder Diffractometer, a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), a Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatograph (GCxGC), several Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) with Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and Photodiode-Arrary Detectors. Through the Research Grant Council Central Allocation successful bids, the Department acquired a Luminescence Lifetime Scanning Spectrometer and a Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer with High Resolution ESI-MS-MS. To further strengthen our research facilities, a MALDI-TOF MS and LIPLC-MSMS was installed.
