Department of Communication Studies
Head: Prof Kara K W Chan

The Department of Communication Studies offers a unique programme of study in Hong Kong. It is the first programme to provide students with a broad and well rounded view of the human communication process. The programme provides both theoretical background and skills to equip its graduates for the many challenges awaiting them upon graduation. The programme centres on Greater China and the role of communication in the international setting. Each option within the Department shares a common core of theory and research skills while emphasizing a different specific application of that knowledge. A strong grounding in theoretical background is provided to give students the necessary tools to solve communication problems.

The Department of Communication Studies has three options: Digital Graphic Communication, Organizational Communication, and Public Relations and Advertising.

The Digital Graphic Communication Option is an integral part of the Communication Studies programme in its tradition of preparing students for innovative leadership for the media and creative industries in the Asia Pacific region. DGC prepares students to generate strategic visual messages for appropriate audiences using digital technology. By offering a dynamic curriculum, we are able to encourage critical thinking and nurture creativity, cultivating innovative leadership and communication solutions for the real world. The DGC curriculum is unique because it acknowledges the multiple dimensions of communication in the digital domain. We take our students across media design, from discrete sequential objects to intelligent connective objects. We focus on designing experiences through human centred interface design. DGC adopts a truly comprehensive multi-media approach to communication.

The Organizational Communication Option offers a broad background in the field of communication. The emphasis is on understanding communication processes and practices that influence everyday activities within the various organizations that we are affiliated with. ORGC students acquire depth of knowledge in both theories and practice in different contexts of face-to-face communication while also developing an understanding of the function of mass media in Chinese society and elsewhere. They have the flexibility of entering communication organizations or bringing communication expertise to the public service, business or educational sectors.

The Public Relations and Advertising Option provides instruction in concepts, processes and management of persuasive communication. It is designed to provide the means for students to maintain excellence in marketing and corporate communication. The programme emphasis is on Hong Kong and Asia with attention to global applications. PRA students develop the concepts and the skills used in analyzing market situation, consumer attitudes and preferences, as well as creating and producing persuasive communications. Students are also educated about the ethical issues involved in advertising and corporate social responsibilities. Students shall apply what they learn in mass media as well as new and social media.

Students in each option are required to take courses in the other two. The three complement and support one another to constitute a full-fledged communication programme.
