Department of Accountancy and Law
Head: Dr Raymond S Y Chan

The Department of Accountancy and Law is located on the 6th floor of the Wing Lung Bank Building for Business Studies of the Shaw Campus. It comprises a total of 25 faculty members; a majority of them have PhD degrees and professional designations in Hong Kong and/or other countries. The Department is responsible for teaching accounting and business law courses. The BBA (Hons) — Accounting Concentration is an accredited accountancy degree for graduate admission into the Qualification Programme (QP) of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA). The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) also gives exemption for nine papers to our accounting graduates. This is the maximum exemption available from ACCA. Other international professional accounting bodies like the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Association of International Accountants (AIA) and CPA Australia have also offered maximum exemptions to our accounting graduates.

The Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Accountancy is offered to the qualified graduates of associated degree or higher diploma programmes since September 2005. This degree programme maintains the same standards as the BBA (Hons) — Accounting Concentration and obtains the same level of recognition or exemption from the related professional accounting bodies.

The Department, with joint efforts of other departments within the School of Business, offers four taught postgraduate level programmes: (1) Master of Science in Applied Accounting and Finance, and Master of Science in Corporate Governance and Directorship which are based on 17 months of part-time study and the students can finish 10 courses in 5 trimesters to obtain the master’s degree; (2) Master of Accountancy which is offered with full-time (12 months) and part-time (24 months) modes; (3) Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting which is offered with both part-time regular mode (11 months) and full-time intensive and regular mode (3 to 6 months). Both Master of Accountancy (Part I - 6 courses relevant to HKICPA accreditation) and Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting are accredited by HKICPA as equivalent to a conversion programme for CPA QP admission purposes. In addition, the Department offers research-oriented Doctor/Master of Philosophy degree(s) in Accounting and Corporate Governance.
