LANGUAGE CENTRE
Head: Prof Kathleen Ahrens

The Language Centre offers courses in English, Chinese, Putonghua and foreign languages (including French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Italian) to undergraduate students of the University. These courses form an integral part of the academic training of HKBU students, in line with our philosophy of whole-person education.

Class sizes in the Language Centre are relatively small, enabling students to practise the skills and receive the guidance they need. The emphasis in all classes is on using language in real-life contexts. A variety of specially prepared learning materials are used, in the form of course books, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and other multimedia interactive software. The Language Centre also operates four state-of-the-art multimedia language laboratories.

In addition to its general, credit-bearing language courses for undergraduates, the Language Centre also designs and delivers various supplementary language courses as well as courses for the MA in Language Studies programme, and for research postgraduate students.

Courses offered in the Language Centre include: (1) core courses: University English I and II, University Chinese; (2) elective courses: Advanced Academic English, Advanced Business English, Advanced English Pronunciation for Professional Communication, Comprehension of Modern Spoken English: Culture and Context, Creative Writing in Children’s Literature in English, English through Creative Writing, English through Current Events, English through Films and Short Stories, Enhancing Spoken Fluency and Accuracy in English, Language Use and Communication in a Bilingual Context, English in the World Today, Being a Communicatively Effective Language Learner and User, Current Events, Creative Writing in Chinese, Creative Writing: Modern Chinese Poetry, Creative Writing through Masterpieces, Modern and Contemporary Theatre: Appreciation and Playwriting, Chinese Writing for Business and Public Administration, Modes of Writing in Chinese, Refining Chinese Writing Skills, Selected Readings in Chinese Language, Elementary Putonghua (Graduation requirement), Intermediate Putonghua (Graduation requirement), Interpersonal Putonghua, Commercial Putonghua, Putonghua Performing Arts Appreciation, Advanced Putonghua, Putonghua Public Speaking, Advanced-Plus Putonghua and foreign languages (including French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Italian).
