The Department of Physics has 12 full-time faculty members. There are approximately 135 undergraduate students and 25 postgraduate students in the Department. The Physics programme comprises two concentrations: Applied Physics and Physics with Computer Science. Strong foundation training in classical and modern physics is complemented with instructions in computing, laboratory physics and specialized applications to ensure students can handle original problems, as they are required to do in their final year project. The Department has established many teaching and research laboratories. The major areas of research are biology physics, device physics, instrumentation, laser physics, materials science, nonlinear physics, quantum optics, soft-matter physics, and statistical physics. Facilities include surface and material characterization/processing systems; a full range of electronic, optical/laser, and cryos/thermal equipment; and numerous networked PCs, workstations and graphic systems. A computer-aided learning lab was opened in early 1999. Past graduates fill various industrial positions, both local and overseas, doing high-tech development and manufacturing, electronic instrumentation and engineering, semiconductor processing, networking and information technology, and software development. Others become teachers, research personnel in public institutions, and sales engineers. A growing number pursue postgraduate or further studies in physics and related disciplines. | ||||||
