Information Systems and e-Business Management Concentration

The Information Systems and e-Business Management concentration is designed to meet the growing needs for managers and end-users of computer-based information systems. As Hong Kong's economy becomes progressively high-tech oriented, there is a growing demand for graduates trained as developers and managers of information technology (IT) to utilize computers in an increasingly automated, fast-expanding but competitive business environment.

It aims to produce managers who can plan and design user-compatible computer-based information systems, analyse and implement new technologies, as well as evaluate and manage new and existing information systems. These graduates are end-user oriented. They have a solid understanding of the business framework for computer applications and are able to communicate with IT professionals regarding users' needs. In addition, they make effective use of IT to enhance productivity, accuracy, and managerial effectiveness, as well as offer efficient support services to professional and managerial tasks. These information systems (IS) professionals need a balanced knowledge of both IT applications and management concepts in order to bridge these two disciplines.

The ISEM concentration is designed specifically to achieve the following objectives:

a) To gain an appreciation of the potential and limitations of the computer-based information systems;
b) To understand and interpret the requirements of an organization in terms of its information needs and to recognize strategic opportunities for the application of computer-based information systems;
c) To contribute to a team engaged in planning, controlling and implementing an information system;
d) To understand and improve the information structure of organizations and their operations;
e) To contribute to a team which applies formal methods in the evaluation, design, implementation, and maintenance of an information system;
f) To develop information as a corporate resource;
g) To liaise with IS professionals and end-users in catering to management needs; and
h) To be practical problem-solvers and effective communicators.
