The Department of Mathematics offers three programmes, the full-time BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Statistics, MSc in Mathematical Finance and MSc in Operational Research and Business Statistics. Good BSc in Mathematics and Statistics students have the option of entering the Diploma in Education programme whereby they receive the BSc (Hons) degree and a Diploma in Education after five years of full-time study. Students with strong academic backgrounds could engage in research leading to the MPhil and PhD degrees. The BSc curriculum lays a solid foundation of mathematical concepts while teaching students how to solve practical problems using mathematics, statistics and computing. Several courses are taught in computer laboratories where students receive hands on experience solving realistic problems. Graduates enter a variety of careers where quantitative skills are valued. Their career areas include education, information technology, finance, and commerce. Many of the BSc graduates go on to study for advanced degrees in mathematics, statistics or related fields. Departmental research and teaching are supported by a network of Unix workstations and personal computers with industrial-strength numerical and statistical software packages. The faculty members¡¦ research covers a broad range of applied areas, including scientific computing, statistics, and graph theory. Several of the colleagues are Director and members of the University¡¦s Statistics Research and Consultancy Centre. Each year numerous scholars from mainland China and overseas visit the Department to engage in collaborative research. The Peking University¡VHong Kong Baptist University Joint Research Institute For Applied Mathematics facilitate these collaboration. The Department also frequently hosts international conferences. |
