Department of Physics
Acting Head: Prof Michel A Van Hove

The Department of Physics has 17 full-time faculty members working in our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.

The BSc (Honours) in Green Energy Science programme provides a solid training ground for students who would like to pursue a multidisciplinary career in the energy industry covering the full spectrum from energy production to energy usage. It equips the students with the latest and state-of-the-art energy technologies and energy management skills to meet the growing demand of manpower in the energy sector, particularly in Hong Kong and in mainland China.

The Physics Department has established many teaching and research laboratories. The major areas of research are biological physics, device physics, instrumentation, laser physics, materials science, organic electronics, nonlinear physics, soft-matter physics, and statistical physics. Facilities include surface and material characterization/processing systems; a full range of electronic, optical/laser, and cryos/thermal equipment; and numerous networked PCs, workstations and graphic systems.

Past graduates from the Physics Department fill various industrial positions, both local and overseas, doing high-tech development and manufacturing, electronic instrumentation and engineering, semiconductor processing, networking and information technology, and software development. Others become teachers, research personnel in public institutions, and sales engineers. A growing number of students pursue postgraduate or further studies in Hong Kong and overseas.
