Department of Biology
Head: Prof Xia Yiji

The Department of Biology offers a four-year full-time programme for the BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology, with two interdisciplinary concentrations of Biotechnology and Environmental Science. Courses are run on a unit-based system, with the course of study during the first and second year being compulsory. Students in their final year are required to partake in individual final year projects; enabling them to gain in-depth knowledge, skills in basic research techniques and experience in writing a thesis.

MPhil and PhD research degrees are an integral part of our academic ethos, with a great number of our postgraduate research projects associated with environmental issues of regional inportance or current developments in a particular scientific field. In recognition of the Department’s scientific standing, many of these projects are also jointly undertaken between experts within the Department and other institutes and universities, either from overseas or mainland China. The Department also actively interacts with public organisations and industry by providing expert advice and technical support, which is achieved using our state-of-the-art facilities. Our commitment to the community has also been culminated through the formation of the Croucher Institute for Environmental Sciences that develops and integrates our collaborative research with scientific exchange programmes.
