Department of Sociology
Head: Prof Jack Barbalet

The Department of Sociology, which was established in 1956, is the oldest tertiary department teaching sociology in Hong Kong. Since its inception, the Department has enabled students to study how society functions and what sustains it.

Today, the Department is concerned to provide the theoretical and practical skills which students need to study sociology in the 21st century. The Department has established an intellectually stimulating environment within which a student-centred learning experience can take place. During their time at Baptist University, Sociology students learn how to conduct research and study society.

The Sociology teaching staff have a wide range of research interests which include: culture, economy, education, family and marriage, globalization, inequality, migration, religion, sex and gender, social change, social movements, social networks, and sociological theory. They are well-qualified to help students examine the nature of society and its influence on their daily lives.

In addition to the three undergraduate programmes introduced below, the Department has also provided postgraduate training since 1991 and several of its graduates have gone on to doctoral studies at leading universities overseas.
