Department of History
Head: Prof Clara Wing-chung Ho

History, which is unarguably one of the oldest academic disciplines, remains a core element of modern education. Instead of merely piling up information about past events, history explains the developments of different cultures, societies and nations, reveals the factors that cause changes, throws light on the diversity of human experience, etc., preparing its learners to cope with the ever-changing world.

The Department of History offers three programmes: (1) Bachelors of Arts (Honours) in History, (2) Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in China Studies—History Option and (3) Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History and Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Liberal Studies Teaching that meet the academic and professional needs of different students. In addition to helping our students develop a holistic perspective of history, we provide thorough training in historical theories, methods and research skills, to enable them to conduct historical inquires effectively and independently.

Our department has established a reputation for its expertise in a number of areas, and our faculty members, besides being enthusiastic teachers, are all active researchers who have attained a high standard of academic achievement.

Convinced that exchange with historians in Hong Kong and abroad facilitates the growth of a dynamic research culture and of a cohesive cross-cultural scholarly community, our department organizes regularly seminars and international conferences, launches collaborative projects and encourages students to participate in overseas exchange programmes.
