Department of Education Studies
Head: Prof Sandy S C Li

The Department of Education Studies was established in 1989 and has offered the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme since 1993 and the Master of Education (MEd) programme since 1995. Both of these are part-time taught programmes. Since September 2001, two more taught programmes have been offered, i.e. the one-year full-time PGDE and the Diploma in Education (Dip in Ed) programmes. In addition, a double degree programme has been offered since 2005, run jointly with the Department of English Language and Literature. The double degree programmes in Liberal Studies, run jointly with the Departments of History, Geography, Sociology began in 2007. From 2011 the Department is offering a Master of Social Sciences in Teaching and Learning (MSocSc in Teaching & Learning).

While the part-time and full-time PGDE programmes aim to provide professional teacher training for in-service and pre-service student-teachers respectively, the Dip in Ed programme provides an opportunity for senior undergraduates of the University to receive teacher training alongside their respective major studies. The double degree programme offers a degree in education with professional teacher training, concurrently with a degree in an academic discipline. The MEd programme with its revised structure incorporating different concentrations, caters to the diverse needs for advanced training in specialized areas of professional work in education related fields. The new MSocSc in Teaching & Learning programme, which focuses on the systematic and research-informed analysis of practice, integrates and exemplifies our commitment to both professional and academic development. In addition, the Department also offers psychology and general education courses for undergraduates and MPhil and PhD programmes for research postgraduates.

Members of the Department strive for excellence in teaching and are active in research. Their areas of research include: educational psychology, critical thinking, special education needs, language education, ICT in education, mathematics education, comparative education, curriculum studies, educational administration, teaching and teacher education, social context of education, moral eduation, leisure education, teacher development, developmental psychology and social psychology.
